Message from Father Schweiger

Recently Fr. Schweiger received a memo from the Diocesan Education Office asking that the following note be published to all school families. Fr. Schweiger has spoken with the staff about these “swatting” events that have occurred in a handful of other Nebraska schools. As part of our response to this information and so that we our prepared in the highly unlikely event of it happening at St. Patrick, the staff has renewed their understanding of our Lockdown procedures. Our first concern is to keep your child(ren) safe. Be assured that if this were to happen at St. Patrick, we would respond with calm, professionalism and most of all, care for our students. We would communicate with you at the earliest moment we could and let you know of our actions. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Fr. Schweiger.

Here in the Diocesan Education Office, we wanted to make all of our school communities aware of a recent and growing concern.  Perhaps you’ve heard of “Swatting.”  In brief, it is a call made to 911.  The purpose is to intentionally make a false report of an active shooter situation or a bomb threat.  The call results in local law enforcement responding to the scene with a SWAT (special weapons and tactics) team.  Thus the term “swatting.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have informed school administrators of the recent increase in false reports involving active shootings and bomb threats, in schools.  In fact, two such false reports were made today  (Thurs. Mar. 2) in Nebraska.

Of course, when this type of 911 call comes in, local law enforcement and the involved schools have no choice but to take the threat seriously.  Meaning, law enforcement may deploy their SWAT team and schools will move into emergency lockdown procedures.  The impact of such a threat to the school community would be profound.  Students, faculty and staff members will be very frightened.  The school day will be significantly disrupted.  The orderly calm of the school and the sense of safety will be impacted.

While we hope and pray something like this never happens in our schools, the fact is, no one can guarantee it will not.  We wanted you, our school community members, to be fully aware of the situation.  Our school administrators have all been made aware.  The NSP has made all law enforcement in the state aware.  But if a 911 call is made involving a school shooter or bomb threat, our schools will respond accordingly.  We’re sure you will agree, the safety and well-being of everyone involved must be our first priority.

We have prepared our schools on how to respond to these types of situations.  Every day, we place our schools in the loving hands of Almighty God, always calling upon the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the angels and saints.  We will continue to do so knowing our help is in the name of the Lord.
